In fact, the ancient Silk Road was not only a trade route that connected to Europe and Asia, but also a way to exchange culture and technology. Ancient creations, such as ceramics, silk, and glass were transported along the ancient Silk Road, giving rise to new scientific and technological inventions. Fields established in ancient times like information dissemination, astronomy, and transportation advanced the process of mutual learning.

As we can see from this section, many commodities on the ancient Silk Road, by taking today’s technological progress, led to new achievements. For example, Chinese scientists represented by Tu Youyou developed artemisinin by combining traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine, providing mankind with the most effective weapon to fight malaria, for which Tu Youyou won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015. Another example is ancient glass. Scientists kept building on previous knowledge until it evolved into a self-healing material that can repair itself after being pressed at room temperature for multiple seconds in the event of cracks or breaks. Today, the silk that was once sought after for crafting delicate clothing can be utilized to make bone nails, which can hold together broken bones. This silk bone nail can degrade in the human body and has fewer side effects than conventional steel nails. In addition, silk bone nails can also be used to make ligaments, tendons, and even nerves.

In this exhibition area, you can also see the evolution of astronomical instruments. As early as in the Zhou Dynasty, a small astronomical instrument called the gnomon, which was over 1 m high, appeared in China. In the Yuan Dynasty, influenced by Islamic astronomical instruments, Chinese astronomical instruments began growing larger in size, evidenced by the Dengfeng Star Observatory, which is several floors tall. Today’s astronomical instruments have become even larger. The aperture of the FAST spherical radio telescope in Guizhou can reach 500 m. In April 2019, scientists fused together a giant telescope that was comparable to the diameter of the earth by coordinating eight astronomical telescopes all around the world, and successfully captured the first photo of a black hole in human history.

The ancient Silk Road opened a new window for friendly exchanges among different areas and fostered a spirit that centered on peaceful cooperation, openness, inclusivity, mutual learning, and mutual benefits. Although the camel bells that sounded along the Silk Road no longer ring, the spirit of the Silk Road has never lost its luster. We today must uphold the spirit of the Silk Road and advance the Belt and Road construction to build a prosperous, open, innovative, and civilized Silk Road for the 21st century.
