Safe Water? Ask the Smartphone

A virtual cottage industry has emerged around finding innovative uses for smartphones. well beyond basic calling, texting and Internet access. In particular, there’s been a lot of interest in turning iPhones into something like the Star Trek medical tricorder.For example, University of Illinois researchers are developing an app and cradle-like device that makes the iPhone a biosensor. The key is the smartphone’s camera and processing power combined with the lenses and filters located in the cradle.
除了最基本的打电话、发短信和上网这些功能，智能手机有不少亟待开发的新奇用途，不少“小作坊”已经加入了创新的阵营之中。特别是，现在人们十分热衷于将iPhone变成类似“星际迷航”里的医用三录仪（tricorder，一种手持式多用途仪器，星际旅行里经常要用到的一种必备仪器，可以完成信息处理、成像扫描、探测诊断等任务）。比如，美国伊利诺伊大学的研究人员正在研发的一个app和一个类似托架的装置，可以将iPhone变成一个生物传感器。智能手机的摄像头和处理能力，以及托架中的透镜和滤光片，是实现这个功能的关键。
Just put a sample of what you want to study on a slide and insert it into the cradle. The iPhone screen indicates a shift in wavelength when the cradle’s photonic crystal detects toxins, proteins, bacteria, viruses or other biological materials on the slide.
你只须将需要检测的样本放在一块载玻片上，再将其插入托架中，如果托架中的光学晶体检测出载玻片上有毒素、蛋白质、细菌、病毒，或者其他生物材料，iPhone屏幕上就会指示出波长的移位。
